Sanjay Dutt is a movie star who has lived a life worth filming. He was a young and talentless actor, a drug addict, son of two legendary actors of Indian film industry. Fame and wealth were nothing new to Sanjay Dutt when he entered the film industry. He is among those lucky people who always have friends and family supporting them all the time. He is so lucky that millions of people who only know him from his movies are organizing campaigns to support him.
He started his film career with a small role as a child star in his father’s movie ‘Reshma aur Shera‘. He became a drug addict when he was in the high school. His mother, the legendary Indian actress Nargis Dutt was diagnosed cancer. She died few weeks before the release of Sanjay Dutt’s first movie ‘Rocky‘. Sanjay Dutt loved her mother very much, it was really very difficult for him to face a media that was making up stories about Sanjay’s drug addiction and how it worsened Nargis Dutt’s cancer. His first movie Rocky didn’t get him any praise from the critics.
Next year (1982) he appeared in Subhash Ghai’s ‘Vidhaata‘, it was the first major hit in his career but all the praise was stolen by the legendary actor Dilip Kumar who played the role of Sanjay’s grand father in the movie and Subhash Ghai the director of the movie. Sanjay’s acting skills were quite horrible at that time but still he was one of the most famous young actors. Subhash Ghai wanted to sign Sanjay for his next movie ‘Hero’, but he signed Jackie Sheroff instead. The reason was Sanjay’s drug addiction.
He lost his mother, media was blaming him for worsening his mother’s health, he was criticized as an actor even after two hit movies in a row. Sanjay was heartbroken and became more addicted to drugs. His father sent him to rehabilitation center in Miami, USA. On the completion of the rehabilitation program, a sober, more talented and more professional Sanjay returned home and restarted his career.
Sanjay married Richa Sharma in 1987 and became father of a baby girl Trishala. Richa was diagnosed cancer soon after the birth of Trishala. The couple got separated and Richa went away to the USA to live with her parents. In 1996 Richa died due to the brain tumor and Sanjay had a bitter courtroom battle with his in-laws over the custody of his child Trishala. Sanjay Dutt lost the battle and Trishala still lives in the USA with her mother’s family. However, Sanjay Dutt has a very good relationship with his daughter.
During the late eighties and early nineties Sanjay performed lead roles in several successful movies including Naam 1986, Haathyar 1989. He was praised (probably for the first time) by critics for his role in Sadak and Saajan both released in 1991. But it was Subhash Ghai’s ‘Khalnayak’ (1993) that gave his career a much needed boost. Khalnayak was not only a huge success at the box office, it also introduced some new trends to the Hindi film industry.
Sanjay Dutt was arrested in April 1993 on charges of keeping illegal weapon that were provided to him by the bombay bomb blast master mind and mafia don Abu Salem. He spent more than 18 months in Jail after being released on bail. During this time he recieved huge support from friends, family, bollywood film fraternity and millions of fans from all over the world.
On 31 July 2007 Sanjay Dutt was sentenced to six years imprisonment. He has filed an appeal in the Supreme court and is now taking the Gandhi Darshan classes in the Pune Jail. Once again Sanjay Dutt recieves huge support from the fans, film industry and his family. Lucky isn’t he?
