With ‘My Name is Khan’, Karan Johar is trying to break free from his usual romantic comedies to step into more serious film-making. Scheduled to be released in February 2010, My Name is Khan is the story of Rizwan Khan who is detained by the U.S. authorities after 9/11/. Rizwan Khan (played by Shahrukh Khan) is a patient of Autism. It is an uncommon disease and one of the characteristics of this disease include difficulties with social interactions. The signs of Shahrukh Khan’s disease are considered by authorities as suspicious behavior.

My Name is Khan is the most anticipated movie since Devdas in 2002. Karan Johar is very careful about not leaking much of the plot details. Film’s cast and crew are also very careful when talking about the movie. Shahrukh Khan has expressed many times that ‘My Name is Khan’ is a different kind of a movie. According to Shahrukh ‘My name is Khan’ is not about terrorism. It is about relationship of an individual with the State, with a religion and with a disease. What I didn’t like about My Name is Khan’s speculated plot is that the main character Rizwan Khan attempts to meet President Barack Obama to clear his name. I can imagine that the typical Hindi movie Formula mind of Karan Johar preparing an emotional and irrational rhetoric for that moment. Karan please don’t do that, let this one be a different movie.

So there will be the usual Karan Johar style of melodrama in the movie. This movie is also highly anticipated because it brings back one of the most loved on-screen couple in Hindi Cinema, Kajol and Shahrukh. Kajol plays the role of Shahrukh Khan’s love interest Mandira Khan, a Hindu Single mom living in San Francisco.

My name is Khan’s music is composed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy. Who has worked with Karan Johar before and has also worked in projects produced by Karan Johar’s company Dharma Productions. The music release date is still unknown but we can be sure that its gonna be an instant hit. Despite the storyline of the movie the soundtrack would consist of songs for all moods. There will be Bhangra pop, a romantic tune, one theme song in sad and happy versions.

You must be living in a cave if you haven’t yet heard about Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan’s spicy bed scene in the upcoming movie Kurbaan. The news are a great publicity tool and Bebo surely knows how to use this tool. She also knows how to use boyfriends as a tool too. Doing bold scenes in a movie does not make any one a better actress; and Kareena is a good actress. She already did a similar scene in her critically acclaimed movie ‘Om Kara’. So basically she is using her trustworthy publicity stunts to remain a hot property among film producers.

Kurbaan is produced by Karan Johar. Sex is a great seller and adding bed or shower scenes in a movie where film’s lead characters are shown making out is an old bollywood trend to spice up the box office value of a movie. Kareena and Saif together in a movie already makes the movie a great sell. But most probably the producers were not confident about movie earning them better returns, even though Karan wrote the story of the movie himself. So he asked the director Rensil D’Silva to add more ingredients into it. We have found out that the movie is about terrorists. Kareena and Saif Ali Khan are playing the roles of terrorists.

Kissing, bed or shower scenes are a taboo in Hindi movies. Most major actors refuse to perform such scenes in their movies worrying about their public image. However, these bold scenes are nothing new and some of the greatest actresses has done them before. I left it for you the readers to mention in comments the actresses that has already done similar scenes. Kurbaan is expected to be released during the last week of November this year. The cast also includes Vivek Oberoi, Diya Mirza and Om Puri.

Dostana - Abhishek Bachchan John Abraham and Priyanka

John Abraham, Priyanka Chopra and Abhishek Bachan’s Dostana is truly a comedy movie, which turns everything into laughter it touches, even the sensitive issue of homosexuality. It has been a success but not as big as Karan had expected it to be. Karan Johar has claimed that Dostana will be the last “Karan Johar Typical” movie. Karan is trying to re-invent himself as a producer and director with movies like ‘My Name is Khan’ and ‘Wake up Sid’.

Dostana is a bollywood ripoff movie of “I now pronounce Chuck and Larry” and “Two to Tango”. It was a good concept, no doubt about that but gives a misconception to the whole concept of being gay. It’s being gay not acting gay.

We understand that our caring Karan did not want to project anything like that but it’s what the community (gay community) conceives. Surprisingly, critics had nothing to say but to praise the new direction of Karan Johar. Even some of the gay activists enjoyed the fact that John Abraham and Abishek Bachan played gay characters in the film, but that is only a small detail of the picture. The whole picture was blunt truth expressed by a Delhi based fashion designer Gaurav Gupta, who has always sympathized with homosexual causes. “It is encouraging that for the first time the theme is a part of a mainstream Hindi movie but I fear it hasn’t been dealt with in a positive way. It’s evident from the film’s trailer that homosexuality is nothing more than a joke in the film,” said Gupta. Common man watches a movie and thinks of it as reality after coming out of the cinema unlike the elite class who looks for a hidden message in the film. Of course one can not claim that India’s majority is the elite class now, can we? Therefore, in my opinion movies are supposed to have an upfront message not a hidden one.

Dharma production claims that the message was to the parents considering the scene where Kiran Kher barges into the apartment when she finds out that her son might be gay and surprisingly supports him. Being in a common man’s shoes I say it was just another comedy scene for me. On the whole the movie is a comedy paradise and so is the word ‘gay’. It really does not offend the gay community but alas the whole world ends up laughing on gays.

Of course, caring Karan had to say something in defense. “This is just a baby step to Brokeback Mountain,” says Karan. Well, if this is your baby step then we all can figure out that its centuries before a brokeback mountain coming from you Karan. The movie is yet another platform to provide comic kicks on the sensitive issue of homosexuality and thus does not create any liberalism towards homosexuality.

Priyanka Chopra is going to sing an ad jingle. Unlike some other actresses it is said that Priyanka has real talent for singing. You may have seen her singing live at KBC with Shahrukh Khan.

Kareena has refused a film with Abhishek Bachchan. She said she wont feel comfortable working with him. How so unprofessional. But this similar not so professional attitude and flame war was actually initiated by Abhishek Bachchan who refused to work with Kareena in a Karan Johar production (many actors in the industry would do any thing to get one such movie). If I were Kareena I might have told Abhishek that he is a lousy actor and that who needs Abhishek when we have Karan in our pocket?

Film makers in Bollywood love to cast rivals together. In 1949, Director Mehboob presented Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor together in the movie Andaz. Both actors were the top heroes of the industry at that time and the movie created the ‘who is the best’ kind of hype. The film was recieved well by the audiences. But considering Mehboob’s casting options at that time I don’t think that this casting scenario was entirely designed to took advantage of the rivalry. In fact Mehboob didn’t have much choice. he needed a triangle and Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Nargis were the best actors to do the job.

In 1982 Amitabh was the acclaimed angry young man and he was then signed up to face Dilip Kumar in the movie Shakti. Even though Dilip Kumar was playing the role of his father but fans and media expected the movie like it is a contest between two giants. And it was, Shakti was a story of a broken relationship between a father and his son. There were intense dialogs, emotionally charged scenes, tears and lots of drama just to make sure that audience get what they wanted from the movie. Shakti wasn’t major blockbuster but Dilip Kumar won filmfare for his role in the movie. This was the last time Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan appeared together in a movie.

In 1991, Rajkumar Santoshi signed Aamir Khan and Salman Khan together for his movie Andaz Apna Apna. Santoshi made a right decission with a hillarious script and wonderful timing. At that time Aamir and Salman were the heartbeat of the youth and the movie created much pre-release press hype. Unfortunately, it took Santoshi three years to complete the movie. By that time the media and the fans lost interest in discussing who is best. Movie didn’t perform well at the box office. But it has its own cult following and is one of the best comedy movies ever (My own opinion).

Even the Shahrukh-Amitabh setting has been tried before. They have worked together in Aditya Chopra’s Mohabbatein (2000) and Karan Johar’s Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001). Both movies did well at the box office. So it seems like Shahrukh Amitabh rivalry is profitable for film-makers.

Shahrukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan are once again going to appear together in the movie ‘Bhootnaath’. This came out when we have already consumed an over-dose of news about the growing tensions and rivalry between the two stars. The rivalry sparked by media is now going to help with the promotion of the new movie.

What I like most about her is that she is sincere to her work. She doesn’t do over exposing like some other actresses. I don’t remember she kissed any one on screen other than Kamal Hasan for Hey Ram. I don’t know if she avoids kissing scenes or what but its strange specially when every actress including Aishwarya Rai is ready to do such scenes to grab audience attention. I love this movie. I can watch and enjoy it anytime. Like many other bollywood movies, it is a love story but this one is so beautifully filmed that you totally forget the fact that you have seen movies with similar stories. You forget that it takes many elements from other movies, like it has a song ‘Its the time to disco’ that looks and sounds a lot like ‘Koi Kehay’ from ‘Dil Chahta Hai‘. A person bringing happiness to a shattered family (like in Bawarchi and countless other movies). A love triangle (A universal romantic movie formula). You forget all this and you just sit down and relax to enjoy the magic this movie creates.Nikhil Advani stepped in as a director for the first time with the release of Kal Ho Na Ho in 2003. Previously Nikhil assisted Karan Johar in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. The producer Karan Johar who also wrote the screenplay for this movie is to be equally credited for this movie. The Karan Johar style is very obvious in the movies in various scenes. Repeatition of theme song during the sad moments in the story and adding guest appearances by Rani Mukherji and Kajol is typically Karan Johar.

StoryThis is the story of Naina (Priety Zinta), an Indian girl who lives with her family in New York City. The story is narrated by Naina. Naina’s life is troubled. Her father committed suicide when she was young. This incident left a huge impact on her life. She is doing MBA in an evening college and works at her mother’s resturant in the morning. Naina’s mother Jennifer (Jaya Bhaduri) is a christian and her paternal grand mother Lajjo Kapur (Sushma Seth) who also lives with them in the same house is a devoted Hindu. The relationship between Jeniffer and Lajjo is that of a typical Indian Saas Baho. They can not stop arguing, the grand mother lives in a culturally isolated world and Jennifer wants her children to grow up naturally in the culture they are living in. The culture of the Indian families living in United States not that of Indian families dreaming India while living in United States. Naina has a younger brother who is unable to walk due to disability and a younger sister. Naina’s younger sister is not from Jeniffer, she was the result of her father’s discreet relationship with a white woman who left Naina’s father and abandoned the baby. Jeniffer took up the responsibility to take care of this little girl as her own daughter.

It was not just the cold war at home. Naina who is very close to her mother knows very well that their restaurant business is not doing so well and they are unable to return the money they loaned from the bank. The only little happiness Naina had in her life was her best friend Rohit (Saif Ali Khan).

Then one day a guy comes from India to live next door. Aman, (Shahrukh Khan) is a happy go lucky sort of guy. He is charming and handsome and every one loves him. Initially Aman’s friendly nature and his never ending attempts to bring happiness to other’s lives frustrates Naina. Later, Naina realizes that Aman has all the things missing in her own life, Aman knew the formula to happiness and she falls in love with Aman. However, Aman has some different plans to bring life back into Naina’s troubled life. He tries to set her up with Rohit.

Music of Kal Ho Na Ho

Music of Kal Ho Na Ho is composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The music is just as melodious and romantic as the movie itself. The title song of the movie ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ sung by Sonu Nigham sets the basic background theme of the movie. The song has two versions, one in the normal tone and the other is the sad version. I just totally love this song, the lyrics beautifully explain the concept and moral of the story in the movie. Video of the song is even better, shot on different locations in Central Park New York City and Toronto.The film was first going to be shot in Toronto but later Karan Johar moved it to New York. However some parts of the song “Kuch To Hua Hai” in the movie are shot in Toronto.

‘Kuch to hova hai’ is a romantic duet sung by Alka Yagnik and Shaan.

The song ‘Pretty Woman’ is a tribute to Roy Orbison who composed the song for Julia Roberts starrer ‘Pretty Woman’. Kal Ho Na Ho’s pretty woman has Bhangra music and it is a simply fantastic dance number.

‘Mahi Ve’ is a typical bollywood wedding song. Wedding songs in movies are a hall mark of Yash Chopra school of thought. You would see such songs in all movies that are made in Yash Chopra style. The entire cast of the movie would dance and celebrate the occassion in the song. Kal Ho Na Ho ‘s Mahi ve is not different from other songs of this genre.

This was Nikhil Advani’s first movie as a director and it is hard to believe that this is his first attempt to entertain bollywood audience. Nikhil had a very strong support from the producer Karan Johar who also wrote the screenplay for the movie. Karan’s work, suggestions and his style is quite obvious in the movie. Kal Ho Na Ho is a typical bollywood family drama set in Manhattan New York. It shows the lives of Indians living in the United States and their problems in a light comic way. Before the release of the movie every one was expecting it to be a copy of 70′s classic Anand. There is a little similarity between the stories of two movies. However it is not a copy of Anand, it is an entirely different and original story.

Shahrukh Khan, Jaya Bahaduri, Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan’s excellent performances create a magical impact on the audience. Dialogues are so refined, yet so simple and powerful. Manish Malhotra designed the costumes for the movies and it was not an easy job for Manish. This was not just a bollywood movie. This movie has a different location and it tells the story of people in cultural chaos. Manish had to come up with costumes that are trendy, casual and depict the culture of Indians based in NYC.
