Karan Johar is busy with his next release “Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna” starring Shahrukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Arjun Rampal and Rani Mukherji. It is rumored that this movie will not hit the box office until June 2006. While looking for information about Kabhi Alvida na Kehna I came across an screen weekly article. In this article Karan Johar talks about Bombay.

“…as a filmmaker I have never “experienced” Bombay. I’d like to some day because I know my Bombay will be very different from what has been projected on film so far. It won’t be the stark, almost surreal, Bombay of Ram Gopal Varma’s films. Nor the effective backdrop it is to a film like Rohan Sippy’s Bluffmaster. My Bombay will be stunning…glamorous… because I’ve always viewed the city through rose-tinted glasses. I’ve not only glossed over her negative points all these years, I’ve also been strangely distanced from her in her times of crisis. Yes, I lived through the 1992 riots but living in South Bombay I never knew the horrors that one read of. Even during last year’s 26/7 deluge I was away shooting in New York.

…I’m sure you must have been dying all this while to remind me that Bombay is Mumbai now. I know that’s the teriminology in use today but it’s difficult for me to refer to this city as anything other than Bombay. She’s my home…a family member…And you don’t change the name of your family member, do you?

Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna is expected to be a typical Karan Johar film. The title of the movie starts with K, It has Shahrukh Khan and Rani Mukherji, costumes designed by Manish Malhotra. While talking to Daily News and Analysis, Manish Malhotra talked about his work in Kabhi Alvida na Kehna:

“It’s based in New York, is in true Karan Johar fashion — a grand film, and it’s the first time, I’ve designed so many costumes. In one song picturised between Rani and Shah Rukh I’ve designed almost 18 outfits! For Amitji, the look is very funky with lots of leather. The movie, especially Rani’s bridal outfit, will make lots of fashion statements.”

Music of Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna is composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (Ehsaan Noorani, Loy Mendonsa, Shankar Mahadevan), Karan Johar came up with the story of the movie and has written the screenplay for it along with Shibani Bathija. The story of movie centers on centers on the budding romance between Jai Varma (Shahrukh Khan) and Shalini Sharma (Rani Mukerji) – both married to different people. Settled into their domestic lives, and convinced that they are happy in their relationships, they still look forward for something deeper and meaningful, which is precisely what they find in each other. From a relationship starting off in pleasant barbs the two begin to develop and acknowledge the feelings they have beneath the surface. When feelings come to the fore they result into a collision of lives and emotions, affecting everyone involved and changing them forever.
