After the super flop movie ‘Mangal Panday’ (a.k.a The Rising) Aamir Khan’s next movie Rang De Basanti is about to hit the box office (January 20 is release date).
Directed by Rakesh Omprakash Mehra ( Aks fame) and Produced by UTV this movie is a story about the awakening of Indian youth. The story begins when a young idealistic British filmmaker, Sue, finds memoirs of her grandfather who served in Indian police under British rule when India was seeking freedom from the Raj. Excited about these memoirs, Sue decides to make a film on Indian revolutionaries mentioned in the diaries. She comes down to Delhi and casts a group of five friends to play the roles of revolutionaries in her movie.

At first the group refuses to become a part of Sue’s docu-drama because they didn’t identify with the heroes from the past. To them issues like patrioticism and revolution look good only in text books. During the movie 1930’s British India and the India today run parallel and intersect with each other as the movie goes on the line between past and present blurs as they become one in spirit.
The role of Sue is played by a British actress Alice Payton. Aamir Khan is playing the role of DJ who passed out university five years back but still wants to be a part of the University because he doesn’t think there’s too much out there in the real world to look forward to. The hunky Kunal Kapoor (Meenaxi fame) is playing Aslam a young muslim guy from a middle class orthodox muslic background. Soha Ali Khan (Saif Ali Khan’s sister) is playing the role of Sonia, the only girl in the group of five.
Music for Rang De Basanti is composed by A. R. Rehman and he has done a superb job once again. You can listen and download the songs here.
